Empowering Language Learners to Level-Up their Proficiency
John Hattie’s research, published under the title of Visual Learning, looked at data involving more than 250 million students. He identified 138 factors or attributes that impact student success, quantified their power to make a difference in student learning outcomes, and then ranked them from most positive effects to most negative. Hattie identified the need to make learning or progress visible to students. The free downloadable Language Passport is designed to be used after students have taken a four-skill proficiency test. Based on their scores, they can use a stamp, sticker, smiley face, or other indicator to show they demonstrated evidence of reaching that level. For example, if a student has a Reading score of Intermediate-Low, they would add a stamp to the Reading quadrant of the Novice-Mid, Novice-High, and Intermediate-Low pages. Students can then use the Language Passport to measure and celebrate their progress, reflect on their learning, and set goals for the future. This tool can be used in conjunction with the Reflection Sheet below, and if a student reaches a new level threshold in all four skills, they could be awarded a Pathway Ribbon.
Language Reflection Sheet
Reflection is central to the learning experience. It serves the function of solidifying a connection between what a student experiences and their understanding of their progress toward a learning target. Quality reflection is formative and evidenced-based. It serves to cement learning and helps learners know where they are on the language learning continuum and set goals towards a Seal of Biliteracy.
The Global Seal of Biliteracy is developing a Language Level Reflection Sheet for each ACTFL sub level. For learners who have never tested, we suggest using our free online Language Proficiency Self Assessment tool based on the ACTFL Can-Do Statements to provide them a “likely proficiency level.” After testing, students can use the Language Level Reflection Sheet at their current level to reflect or at the next level to set goals to move up to the next level in one or more skill areas.
