February Activities

For the February activities in the Global Classroom Pair-Share program, select the proficiency level that suits your students. If you're familiar with the ACTFL scale, here are the equivalents: A1 is for Novice Low/Mid, A2 for Novice High/Intermediate Low, B1 for Intermediate Mid/High, and B2 for Advanced Low/Mid. Complete appropriate activities by March 15 and share them in the Global Classroom Pair-Share Facebook group.

A1 Activities

SAVE THE CREATURE!

Student teams research endangered species in their paired country and collaborate with each other to produce a presentation for their paired class(es) using simple descriptive sentences, short lists, or word labels in the target language. (Teacher should share a short vocabulary list, such as: animal, endangered, bird, fish)

Resources & Apps:

WHO ARE YOU?

Students prepare simple questions (who, what, when, where, how many) to learn more about their paired students to ask and answer during an online meeting or asynchronous app (e.g. padlet, flipgrid, ...). At the end, students will describe their matched student in short sentences. Optional level-up; students create a venn diagram /add a link to definition/ comparing themselves with a paired student. Present their venn diagram using a compound sentence (using 'and', 'or', 'but').

A2 Activities

LISTEN UP!

Students choose a monster or villain from their own folk tales and describe it to their paired classroom using several complete sentences in the target language (Teacher may need to prepare a list of folk tales and/or body parts vocabulary.) Ask them to draw it. Then switch roles. Students share and compare their drawings.

Resources & Apps:

LET'S EAT!

Paired teachers work to pair (or small group) students with students from their paired classroom. Students ask a new friend from their paired classroom about their favourite foods/dishes. Ask for a list of the ingredients and directions to prepare the dish. As a class, compile a book of popular recipes in the target language. (Teacher can support students with a list of cooking terms/verbs. Great opportunity to practise numbers and fractions.)

B1 Activities

WHAT'S TRENDING?

Together with their paired classroom, students choose 2-3 countries from different continents, not their own. Find out about their hobbies, fashion, sports and/or entertainment (popular culture). Students prepare a short video or written presentation including an introduction, detailed descriptions, and a conclusion sentence about what they have learned. Share the video or paragraph on our GCPS_2024 Padlet.

Resources & Apps:

OUT AND ABOUT

Students create a video describing how people get around in their town or city (walk, bicycle/scooter, car, Uber/taxi, bus, boat, tram/train, metro/subway). After viewing the paired classroom's video(s), students comment on how their transportation differs from the paired class (live or via an app).

B2 Activities

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

Students watch an interview with a successful person that interests them. Students summarize, in their own words, then introduce the person, share why they are interested, and tell why the person achieved success and post it on the GCPS_2024 Padlet. After presentations, students write/record a paragraph to identify activities/qualities that lead to success.

Resources & Apps:

HAVE YOUR SAY

Paired teachers decide on one or more texts or videos for students to read/watch about controversies relating to technology (privacy, AI, social media). Have students read/watch selected material and hold a debate or Socratic Seminar. The goal is for students to share and support opinions and agree or disagree with courtesy.
