April Activities

For the April activities in the Global Classroom Pair-Share program, select the proficiency level that suits your students. If you're familiar with the ACTFL scale, here are the equivalents: A1 is for Novice Low/Mid, A2 for Novice High/Intermediate Low, B1 for Intermediate Mid/High, and B2 for Advanced Low/Mid. Complete appropriate activities by May 15 and share them in the Global Classroom Pair-Share Facebook group.

A1 Activities

I AM HUNGRY!

Students prepare a list of foods popular in their country to share with their paired classroom. Then the paired classroom looks for pictures of the foods/ingredients and prepare a simple menu they would like to try. (For A1+ - students can create a VENN DIAGRAM to compare and contrast what both classrooms eat and write summary sentences.)

Resources & Apps:

TEACHER, DOCTOR, LAWYER?

Students create a vocabulary list of words that someone in a particular job would need to know. Teacher groups students by career categories. Students work as a group to make funny sentences with their combined vocabulary words. Students share their sentences with their paired classroom on padlet.

A2 Activities

LOL

Teachers find and present an intro video about texting abbreviation and acronyms in a language the students are learning. Students look for texting acronyms to create their own list. Students then practise sending texts to each other on paper or with an app. Find a time to meet with your paired classroom and students use the chatbox to text each other. (Suggest smaller groups in breakout rooms. If you cannot meet live, use Google Doc or another app to exchange texts asynchronously. Teacher may need to set guidelines about the appropriateness of vocabulary chosen.)

Resources & Apps:

LET'S EAT!

Students co-create a vocabulary list about parties and celebrations (birthdays, holidays, national celebrations). Using the vocabulary list choose a reason to celebrate and create a story. Present the story to your paired classroom (read aloud live, record and post, use an app to write and illustrate). The paired classroom can comment in padlet (on their favorites, what they learned, etc.).

B1 Activities

TIE THE KNOT

Students look for information about wedding traditions in their paired country (clothes, food, drinks, music). Co-create a list of wedding vocabulary. Using the list, students exchage follow up questions with their paired classroom about what they have learned and their experiences with weddings. The students discuss differences and similarities and create a podcast, video presentation or a list of FAQs about weddings.

JOIN US!

Students investigate group activities that students do after school (clubs, competitive sports, intramural sports, extra classes) and contribute to a shared vocabulary list with mentimeter or answergarden. Prepare a video or written advertisement describing an after school activity in which they encourage others to join.

B2 Activities

MULTIFACETED COMMUNITIES

How can we value diversity? How do we respect the language, traditions, and beliefs of others in a multicultural society? Find out about ethnic minorites that live in your region and that of your paired classroom. Create a podcast to share how a community can benefit from diverse perspectives and community members.

BE THE CHANGE

Students, with their paired classrooms, exchange information about environmental protection in their country. Together, they create a glossary of important terms and prepare an article for an online magazine, sharing what is done and what can be improved in this matter.
