Jose Alejandro Viana

Senior Education Advisor for Rosetta Stone & Former Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of English Language Acquisition

José Viana joined Lexia Learning in 2019 as a senior advisor, bringing 30 years of experience in education. Viana was most recently the Assistant Deputy Secretary and Director of the Office of English Language Acquisition at the US Department of Education. In this role, he was responsible for the overall leadership, management, and direction of education for English language learners nationwide. Prior to joining the Department, Viana served for eight years as an administrator of the Migrant Education Program for North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction. José began his career in Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a teacher for English language learners. After acquiring his degree in educational leadership, Viana became an elementary school administrator for Durham Public Schools, where he established the districtwide Title I Parent Advisement Committee for Hispanics. Viana is a second-generation Cuban immigrant who started his primary years as an English language learner.

Providing Services to Emergent Bilinguals in Our “New Now”

José will review the ESEA requirements for English learners and what state and district responsibilities look like in our current situation according the US-DOE. He will also share some district challenges currently being discussed by top language experts nationally and highlight several evidence-based solutions like, ensuring English learners and their parents are fully engaged while remote learning.
