Florencia Henshaw

Director of Advanced Spanish, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Florencia Henshaw has a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she is now the Director of Advanced Spanish. Dr. Henshaw has published and presented on technology integration, heritage language instruction, and research-based pedagogical practices at national and international conferences, and she has been an invited speaker at prominent institutions, including Harvard and Yale. She is also a certified ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview tester, the author of two Spanish textbooks, an Editorial Board member of FLTMAG, and the current Vice-President of the Downstate Illinois Chapter of AATSP. Her upcoming book, "Common Ground: Second Language Acquisition Theory Goes to the Classroom" (co-authored with Maris Hawkins), aims to help educators visualize how to put principles into action.

Technology-enhanced interpretive communication activities

How can we capitalize on available tech tools to hone our students’ interpretive communication skills? In this session, I will describe different ways in which technology can help educators not only provide learners with rich bimodal input (oral and written), but also incorporate creative and engaging post-reading/listening activities.
